Research Seminar: Mitochondrial calcium transport has a central role in metabolic regulation

Mitochondria provide cells with energy and many essential metabolites. Dysfunctions affecting these important organelles can cause a number of severe genetic and metabolic disorders.

In an upcoming seminar, 2022 Ben Barres Spotlight Award recipient Alicia Kowaltowski will discuss her lab’s ongoing research into mitochondrial ion transport and redox state, how dietary interventions impact energy metabolism, and how mitochondrial function influences age-related disease.

The talk is part of the monthly MITOtalks online seminar series and will be followed by a Q&A session, chaired by eLife Senior Editor Benoît Kornmann, dedicated to answering your questions about publishing with eLife.

About the speakers:

Alicia J Kowaltowski

Alicia J Kowaltowski completed her training as a physician at the State University of Campinas, Brazil, in 1997, and has a PhD in medical sciences, under the supervision of Anibal Vercesi (State University of Campinas) and Gary Fiskum (University of Maryland). She was a postdoc at the Oregon Graduate Institute. She is currently a Full Professor of Biochemistry at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, where she heads the Energy Metabolism Lab. She is also actively involved in science communication, having written two books for general audiences, as well as contributing to a bi-monthly column in a national newspaper. She is a Fellow and former Vice-President of the Society for Redox Biology and Medicine, a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow, and a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. She was awarded a Ben Barres Spotlight Award runners-up prize in 2022 and has published a Reviewed Preprint reporting that ‘Adiponectin reverses β-cell damage and impaired insulin secretion induced by obesity’.

Benoît Kornmann is Associate Professor at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Oxford, and fellow of St Hugh’s College, Oxford. He studies membrane contact sites, how intracellular organisation impinges on organelle function and how lipid molecules are distributed among the many membranes of a eukaryotic cell. He holds a PhD from the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and previously held the positions of Assistant Professor at the ETH Zurich, Professor of the Swiss National Science Foundation, and fellow of the Swiss National Science Foundation.

About the Ben Barres Spotlight Awards:

The Ben Barres Spotlight Awards are run annually by eLife to provide visibility and funds to researchers from underrepresented groups in biology and medicine or from countries with limited research funding. The awards are named in memory of our late colleague, transgender researcher and fervent advocate for equality in science, Ben Barres. The awards are open to eligible authors of preprints with publicly available reviews as well as authors published in eLife. Reviewers for these awards focus primarily on the catalytic potential of the funds towards overcoming barriers and unlocking new opportunities for the applicants’ research and career.
