The teams at AfricArXiv, Eider Africa, TCC Africa, and PREreview would like to present the first in their series of three collaborative peer review workshops focused on bringing together scholars from across Africa and scholars engaged in African-related research for a virtual discussion.
The workshop will begin with the facilitators introducing the partnership and explaining the motivating factors for organising this series. Participants will then be encouraged to provide constructive feedback on a preprint which has been recently published by African-based research groups or touch on African-relevant content.
The workshops are also intended to create a platform to reflect on barriers to participation in peer review rooted in colonialism, white supremacy culture and the patriarchal systems which dominate scholarship today.
Given the high number of registered participants and the capacity to hold up to 100 per workshop, the events will be live-streamed on a Facebook Group accessible to registered participants who are not able to join the Zoom meeting because capacity for that day is reached. Participants will receive information about how to join via email.
The first workshop will last an hour and a half and will take place on April 29 at 3pm GMT | 4pm WAT | 5pm CAT | 6pm EAT. Participants will be discussing a preprint recently published on the preprint server AfricArXiv by Mwangi et al., 2021 “Open Science in Kenya: Where are we?" https://osf.io/preprints/africarxiv/mgkw3.

Registered participants who will not be able to enter the room, will be redirected to a closed Facebook group where they will be able to live-stream the event. AfricArXiv is a community-led digital archive for African research, working towards building an African-owned open scholarly repository; a knowledge commons of African scholarly works to catalyze the African Renaissance. They partner with established scholarly repository services to provide a platform for African scientists of any discipline to present their research findings and connect with other researchers on the African continent and globally.
Eider Africa is an organisation that conducts research, co-designs and implements collaboratively, offline and online research mentorship programs for scholars in Africa. They train mentors to start their mentorship programs. They believe in peer to peer learning, learning research by practice, caring for the whole researcher and lifelong learning. They have grown a vibrant community of researchers in our research journal clubs and work with university lecturers to develop transformative inclusive research training.
The Training Centre in Communication (TCC Africa) is the first African-based training centre to teach effective communication skills to scientists. TCC Africa is an award winning Trust, established as a non-profit entity in 2006 and is registered in Kenya. TCC Africa provides capacity support in improving researchers output and visibility through training in scholarly and science communication.
PREreview is an open project fiscally sponsored by the non-profit organization Code for Science and Society. Their mission is to bring more equity and transparency to the scholarly peer review process. They design and develop open source infrastructure to enable constructive feedback to preprints, they run peer review mentoring and training programs, and they partner with like-minded organizations to organise events providing opportunities for researchers to create meaningful collaborations and connections defeating cultural and geographical barriers.
