eLife Community Ambassadors: 243 volunteers join the programme in 2019

Diverse researchers from across the world are joining forces to promote responsible behaviours in science.

A new cohort of eLife Community Ambassadors joins the efforts of our Early-Career Advisory Group (ECAG) to help promote greater openness, collaboration, improved reproducibility, diversity and funding access in life sciences and biomedicine.

As an ECAG member who’s overseen the recruitment process, Hedyeh Ebrahimi, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Iran, said:

“We worked hard to invite researchers from all corners of the world, all specialisms and a variety of circumstances. I’m very pleased to welcome such a strong and diverse group of scientists to the programme this year.”

With 117 women and 126 men, based around the entire globe, from Australia to Venezuela, and from the AIDS Research Institute in Spain to Zagazig University in Egypt, researchers will join forces to promote progressive changes in academic culture across a number of key themes.

Tracey Weissgerber, Mayo Clinic, United States, QUEST, Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and Berlin Institute of Health, Germany, a member of the eLife ECAG, said:

"This year we’ve created a variety of new training opportunities that are designed to help participants learn about responsible scientific practices. This will equip Ambassadors to improve their own research, while advocating for greater transparency, rigor, collaboration, and inclusiveness in the scientific community.”

Programme Associates

Individuals outside active research, who represent like-minded organisations and are keen to support eLife Ambassadors with their resources and expertise, have been invited to contribute to to the programme as Ambassadors Associates.

Adriana Bankston (Future of Research, USA) and Natalia Bielczyk (Organization for Human Brain Mapping Student and Postdoc Special Interest Group, and Stichting Solaris Onderzoek en Ontwikkeling, the Netherlands) will support the Ambassadors with their background in career development and mentoring for early career scientists.

Samantha Hindle (bioRxiv, USA) and Daniela Saderi (Mozilla Fellow and Project Lead at PREreview, USA), former eLife Ambassadors themselves, will now support the volunteers in promoting wider adoption and use of preprints.

Huajin Wang (University Libraries, Carnegie Mellon University, USA) will support the Ambassadors with expertise in research data management and reuse.

Steven Burgess (a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA), the founder of ecrLife.org, while an active researcher, he joins the Ambassadors Associates this year to continue as the blog’s editor.
