In their Research article -- Reinstatement of long-term memory following erasure of its behavioral and synaptic expression in Aplysia-- Chen et al. studied whether long-term memory is actually stored in the brain's synapses. They suggest that memory is not stored in specific synapses and that memory does not depend on synapses between the neurons being maintained.
