Making the most of eLife peer reviews

eLife offers authors efficient, constructive reviews from experts in the field – with the option to share reviews confidentially with another journal if their work isn’t accepted.

At eLife, corresponding authors for articles rejected after peer review can ask to have their reviews shared with another journal, along with the reviewer identities if they have agreed. The other journal can then decide whether a fresh round of review is needed, or if they can carry forward without, with a view towards streamlining the review process. Since introducing this service, 80% of eLife referees would agree to share their name with another journal, along with their review, if the corresponding author initiates this process.

We’ll transfer review information to any other appropriate journal, including the PLOS journals, EMBO Reports, Biology Open, BMC Biology, and the BMC-series journals. Authors should indicate to these journals in their cover letter, and submission form where appropriate, that the paper was previously reviewed at eLife. Further details are available in our author guide.

By offering this service, eLife hopes to help authors avoid lengthy re-review and reduce the burden on peer reviewers.
