About eLife

Research communication is essential in accelerating discovery and helping science to move the world forward. eLife is a well funded, non-profit organisation whose mission is to improve research communication in the areas of publishing, technology and research culture. We want information to be shared openly, respectfully and promptly but most importantly we want research to be freely accessible. Technology is just one part of the puzzle, where we are developing open-source tools and technologies for scientific publishing so we can improve how important research is selected, presented and shared.

About the Team

We’re a small, distributed team who are passionate about continuous improvement and software quality. We approach problems in an agile fashion, focusing on making small incremental improvements which helps us to focus our efforts on adding value rather than bloat. When we can, we pair up, share screens or mob to collaborate on developing solutions and help spread knowledge throughout the team.

Experience and attributes

You have:

  • Good communication skills, and are able to work collaboratively and respectfully with other team members.
  • A pragmatic approach to engineering and problem solving.
  • Experience in end-to-end software development with at least one language.
  • Fluency with data, analytics and visualization technologies.

Specific responsibilities

We are looking for an experienced data engineer who will help collect, collate and visualise data for the organisation to aid our decision making, alongside supporting our data scientists with development of a semantic xml extraction tool.

You will:

  • Ensure that our existing data pipelines and dashboards stay up-to-date, secure, online and functional.
  • Work with stakeholders and other developers to architect solutions that collate and visualise information that we can use to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and reach of publishing operations for us and our partners.
  • Help us define and develop a strategy for how we can better use data within the organisation to progress our mission to improve research communication.
  • Additional duties as requested.

Terms and conditions

The post is a permanent position, 37.5 hours per week, and offers a competitive basic annual salary in the range of £40,000-£55,000 (depending on experience). Applicants must be able to demonstrate the right to live and work in the UK to be considered for the vacancy.
