Molecular basis for activation of lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase by a compound that increases HDL cholesterol
Hi eLife readers, I am the first author of this paper and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan. I chose this sentence to highlight because it describes an exciting result of this work. Different variants of Arg-244 mutations have been published recently for LCAT genetic disease, and so we tested the ability of a patented compound to enhance LCAT activity for one of those mutations. We were able to boost the activity of the mutation we examined to basal LCAT activity levels in vitro. In the future we hope to test other mutations to see if small molecules could be beneficial therapeutics for familial LCAT deficiency.
