Ben Barres Spotlight Awards: The 2024 Awards Ceremony

Join us on July 3 as we publicly announce the winners for 2024 and look back on the awards’ impact over the past five years.

We're delighted to invite you to join an online celebration of pioneering researchers from around the world as we reveal the winners of the 2024 Ben Barres Spotlight Awards in our first-ever award ceremony.

Established in 2019, these awards have so far recognised over 50 visionary researchers from underrepresented groups in biology and medicine, who are often working in regions where research funding is limited. The ceremony will offer the chance for you to hear firsthand from recipients from the past five years about how their awards catalysed change for their research, careers or communities.

Named in honour of the late Ben Barres, a trailblazing transgender researcher, former eLife editor and ardent advocate for equality in science, the awards are part of eLife’s efforts to foster a more equitable and inclusive culture for research. The event will include reflections on Ben’s legacy, highlighting his groundbreaking contributions and tireless efforts towards promoting equity in science.

Hosted by our Executive Director Damian Pattinson, we are honoured to have Leslie Vosshall, vice president and chief scientific officer at The Howard Hughes Medical Institute, join as a guest speaker. eLife co-Editor-in-Chief Timothy Behrens, Deputy Editors Yamini Dalal and Diane Harper, and eLife early-career advisor Elizabeth Ochola will then jointly announce the recipients of the 2024 awards.

Join us on Wednesday, July 3 from 1–2pm BST | 8–9am EDT | 5:30–6:30pm IST
